
Jochen Mass passed away on 4 May 2025. Jochen Mass was a former Formula 1 driver, Le Mans winner and also a motorsport commentator for German broadcaster RTL.
In February this year, Jochen Mass suffered a stroke, and various complications ultimately led to his death. Jochen Mass was 78 years old and spent his last years in Cannes, France.
Mass was going to be a sailor because that was his professional training. However, in the late 1960s, he started his successful career in touring cars. In 1972, Jochen Mass and Hans-Joachim Stuck won the 24 Hours of Spa.
In 1973, Mass made his Formula 1 debut with the Surtees team, and he was so good that he was able to complete the entire season.
Mass’s only Formula 1 victory was in 1975 at the Circuit de Montjuïc during the Spanish Grand Prix. He drove in Formula 1 until the end of the 1982 season. In total, he competed in 105 races and collected 71 World Championship points.
Furthermore, the list of his activities in motor racing is almost endless. In 1976, for example, he was a Porsche factory driver and also won the constructors’ championship in the same year.
We knew Jochen Mass from his numerous appearances at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival and also the Classic Days. Jochen Mass was a very approachable person who enjoyed chatting. He often talked about his racing past.
He will be missed because he was a welcome guest at every event. We wish his family and friends much strength in coping with this loss.
