During a trip to London, we had the opportunity to discover the new Tag Heuer Carrera launched for the 60th anniversary of the Carrera model. Find out more about this timepiece in this article.
Introduction
The Heuer Carrera was conceived in 1963 during the 12 Hours of Sebring, where Jack Heuer, official timekeeper of the event, first heard of the legendary Carrera Carrera Panamericana Mexico Road Race. The discovery of this imaginative race led to the creation of a chronograph for professional drivers, the Carrera.
Porsche and Tag Heuer are also unmistakably linked with this Carrera model and this has also led to numerous collaborations between the two brands in history. In fact, Porsche already participated in the “Carrera Panamericana” for the first time in 1952.
For the 60th anniversary edition, Tag Heuer went the extra mile and commissioned a comic short film starring their Carrera ambassador and also well-known actor Ryan Gosling where the timepiece and a Porsche Carrera are starring together. You can watch the film, “The CHASE for CARRERA” down here.
For this anniversary edition, we were able to get hands on with the new timepiece ourselves in London at the Tag Heuer flagship store. Hereby we would like to thank Tag Heuer London once again for hosting us.
The watch
The newly designed 60th anniversary edition is a reinterpretation of the mythical Heuer Carrera. The timepiece is available in a deep blue dial or black reverse panda dial. These 2 editions are very wearable with their size of 39mm.
On the dial we find a typical Tricompax Carrera Chrono layout with the second hand in the bottom center and the date window in it. On the black reverse panda, the date window is not at the 6 o’clock position but at the top of the 12 o’clock indication. In addition, on the left at 9 o’clock we have the indication of the elapsed hours when the chrono is used and on the right at 3 o’clock we find the elapsed minutes.
In the 60 years edition, we also find a tachymeter scale on the edge of the dial but it is located under the domed sapphire glass and thus not on the bezel of the movement like other Carrera models. Because of this choice, for us the movement forms a beautiful and elegant whole. The hour and minute hands and the ends of the hour markers have super-luminova which makes the movement readable even in the dark.
A transparent sapphire glass is provided at the bottom of the movement, revealing the automatic Caliber TH20-00. This movement, with a power reserve of 80 hours, is beautifully finished with côtes de Genêve and has a custom-made rotor that is beautifully shaped and partially carved. The rotor is bi-directional and can wind the movement in either direction.
