The Perun Veles Pointer Date Automatic is an extraordinary timepiece that combines Slavic mythology with Swiss precision. With its sophisticated design, high-quality materials and unique cultural details, this watch is a perfect blend of tradition and innovation. Find out all about it in this article.

History

On this site we regulary highlight a microbrand where the founders out of pure passion design a timepiece according to their vision. Here we regularly see them using existing design concepts from other timepieces but with their own twist and creativity which in many cases leads to beautiful timepieces. This is certainly the case for the Perun Veles. The owners of this microbrand, Jelena and Ante Kalajžić, come from the country of Croatia more specifically from the city of Split which for me personally is one of my favorite cities to visit.

The love for the country of Croatia and its culture already starts with the name Veles, the Slavic god of both the underworld and nature. It represents duality and adaptability – just like a reliable timepiece. Just as the God Veles moves effortlessly between worlds, from protecting livestock to guiding souls, the Veles timepiece seamlessly adapts to any environment through its build quality and design. Whether you are taking a day hike in nature or attending an event, the Veles timepiece feels at home anywhere and embodies both versatility and reliability.

The timepiece

The references to Slavic culture don’t just stop at the naming. It starts as early as packaging where the symbols of many Slavic gods are silk-screened on the watch’s wooden box.

Looking at the dial, at the height of 12 o’clock we find the modern symbol of Veles, god of earth and the underworld who was often depicted with elk horns on his head.

The crown of the clockwork is decorated with the symbol of a thunder mark also known as “gromoviti znaci,” the symbol of the god Perun that was often carved on wooden beams under roofs for protection against lightning.

The brand name Perun is written on the dial in Glagolitic script, the oldest known Slavic alphabet created in the 9th century and used in Croatia until the 19th century.

On the bottom of the movement we find the Kolovrat symbol or translated “Slavic Sun.” This symbol represents the cyclical nature of the sun and the changing of the seas and the passage of time.

Design and Features

The Veles has a 40 mm wide case made of 316L stainless steel, with a lug-to-lug distance of 47.5 mm, making it fit comfortably on a variety of wrist sizes. The watch is equipped with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with an internal anti-reflective coating, ensuring optimal legibility under various lighting conditions.

The dial is made of glossy enamel and is available in 2 colors: ‘Pearl White’ and ‘Midnight Black’. Striking details include the ‘Veles horns‘ at the 12 o’clock position and the use of Super-LumiNova® BGW9 for excellent visibility in the dark. On the dial we clearly see a reference to the Rolex Explorer with the 3,6,9 indications and the circles at the other hour markers and the V at 12 o’clock.

Inside the Veles ticks the reliable Swiss Sellita SW221-1, an automatic movement with a power reserve of 38 hours and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz).

This timepiece features a pointer date complication, where a central pointer indicates the date on the edge of the dial. This complication originated in the early 20th century, with the first patents filed in 1915, and became especially popular with Oris’ Big Crown Pointer Date, introduced in 1938.

Functionality and Wear Comfort

The watch is water resistant to 150 meters (15 ATM), making it suitable for a variety of activities, from everyday use to water sports. The stainless steel bracelet features a micro-adjustable folding clasp for a perfect fit and has a quick-change system, making it easy to change to a leather or silicone strap with a width of 20 mm.
