The question of whether cars can be considered art or not is actually irrelevant. It has long been proven that there are real works of art driving around.
I deliberately put this in the past because even though there are still outliers in design now, everything has become much braver.
Is it out of fear that a more outspoken design will not meet expectations, so that a particular model might sell less? It may not be pronounced but people used to deviate more from the beaten track.
So above we see the Lamborghini Miura, regarded by many as one of the most beautiful sports cars of all time.
This Mercedes 300SL Gulwing is another undeniable feat of design.
And these two cars above along with several others prompted Autoworld to create an expo around car design.
This is how ‘When automotive design becomes art’ came about. And even though it is a rather small exhibition, it is well worth the trip to Brussels.
The Pegaso above is therefore a car few people have seen ‘live’. However, this Spanish beauty regularly wins prizes when it comes to design.
The expo was opened by Herman de Croo. Mr de Croo has been chairman of Autoworld for no less than 36 years and helped make the museum great. In his explanation, you could feel his passion for cars. It’s great that he can still communicate this at the age of 87.
